Dinner\ntime is approaching . . . rolling pin, flour, dough, tomato paste, toppings,\nkids scrambling to wash their hands . . . It\u2019s pizza-making time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One\nof the activities my kids thoroughly enjoy is helping me make homemade pizza.\nThere will be two balls of pizza dough: one for me to work on and the other for\nthe three- and six-year-old to make their own kiddie pizza, just the way they\nwant it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We get\nto work and sing our five-step pizza preparation song while making silly faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My six-year-old\nunderstood the process before her younger brother and is always quick to tell\nhim how to do it right. He, nevertheless, always makes it a point of duty to get\nsome flour on his face and hair\u2014just one of his very own steps in the pizza-making\nprocess. But the mess pales in comparison to knowing that my kids want to do\nwhat they see me doing. They want to imitate me in this interesting and\nrewarding task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My\nheart melted the day my three-year-old\u2014without prompting\u2014asked for the cheese\nafter spreading the sauce on the rolled out dough. \u201cHe\u2019s got it!\u201d I thought as\nI smiled and handed him the shredded cheese while enthusiastically inserting a\n\u201cGood job!\u201d He had watched his big sister and me do this so many times, and\nwith a lot of practice, he now knew the drill: roll the pizza dough, spread the\npizza sauce, add the cheese, add the toppings, and into the oven it goes. He was\non his way to becoming a full-fledged \u201cMommy\u2019s homemade pizza\u201d disciple<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the American Heritage Dictionary<\/em>,\na disciple is \u201cone who embraces and assists in spreading the teachings of\nanother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\nare all called to be<\/em> and make<\/em> disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nAndrew\u2019s teaching on Discipleship: The\nPath to Freedom<\/em>, he says, \u201cDiscipleship is what is missing in most people\u2019s\nlives. I really believe that one of the biggest mistakes that has been made in\nthe body of Christ is that we have put the emphasis on evangelism and making\nconverts, getting people just born again, instead of doing what Jesus told us\nto . . . Jesus didn\u2019t tell us to go and get people born again . . . he told us\nto go and make disciples.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go therefore and <\/em>make disciples<\/em><\/strong> of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, <\/em>teaching<\/em><\/strong> them to observe all that I commanded you.<\/em><\/p>

There\nis no sweeter sound to the ears of a parent than the sound of their children\nsaying, \u201cI want to be just like you!\u201d The same is true of our heavenly Father.\nHe created us in His image, and part of His redemption plan is that we be\ntransformed into His image by the renewing of our minds to His Word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.<\/em><\/p>
Ephesians 5:1, NASB<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Just\nlike my kids learned to make pizza by willingly<\/em>\nwatching and helping me, you become a disciple by imitation, which comes\nthrough desire, association, observation, and practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, \u201cYou are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.\u201d<\/em><\/p>

I look forward to seeing my three-year-old go on to have his own influence and impact on others. It will make all of the messy cleanups worth it. Similarly, being<\/em> and making<\/em> disciples of Jesus makes the precious price that He paid all the more worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
