For many years, the area of finances was one of the hardest parts of my walk with God. I loved the Lord and believed His Word, yet I struggled financially. From around 1972, when I started in ministry, all the way to 1996, Jamie and I barely made ends meet\u2014and it nearly shut our ministry down. But it wasn\u2019t God\u2019s fault\u2014it was mine. I had fear, doubt, and wrong concepts about money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Church Myths About Money<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Much of that struggle came from what I\u2019d been taught about money as a believer. I grew up in a church that taught it was ungodly to talk about finances. They believed that if you were a Christian, God would supply your\u00a0needs<\/i>\u00a0(Phil. 4:19), not your\u00a0wants<\/i>. They really emphasized 1 Timothy 6:10, that the love of money is the root of all evil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That way of thinking may sound spiritual, but it actually distorts Scripture by treating money itself as evil. That misunderstanding has cost people dearly. I\u2019ve seen believers struggle emotionally, physically, and in their relationships simply because they didn\u2019t understand God\u2019s heart when it comes to prosperity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once I began to understand what Scripture actually teaches, I started seeing dramatic change\u2014not only in my own life, but in others as well. Let me tell you about Colin and April Carr, graduates of Charis Bible College. When they arrived at school, they had some serious problems. But today, after trusting God and applying His Word, they\u2019re running a business doing over a billion dollars in annual income. That\u2019s not arrogance\u2014it\u2019s freedom. That\u2019s what happens when Christians embrace biblical financial stewardship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prosperity Prejudice<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet, despite fruit like that, there\u2019s still a lot of prejudice surrounding this subject. If you talk about a doctor, lawyer, athlete, or celebrity prospering, it\u2019s no problem. But when it\u2019s a Christian or a minister, suddenly everyone\u2019s eyebrows go up. That\u2019s because of this old, misguided idea that a minister must live in lack to be \u201chumble.\u201d That\u2019s just not scriptural. Abraham, David, Solomon, and many others were all blessed and prosperous. Prosperity in God\u2019s hands isn\u2019t a sin\u2014it\u2019s good stewardship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Your Thinking Affects Your Finances<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the root of all this isn\u2019t money\u2014it\u2019s thinking. Proverbs 23:7 says that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. If you\u2019re poor, it\u2019s because your thinking is poor. It\u2019s not because of your skin color, gender, or education. It\u2019s not because someone didn\u2019t treat you fairly. Your finances are a reflection of your mindset about money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The good news is that your thinking can change. Beliefs can change. And when your heart and mind line up with God\u2019s Word, financial breakthrough follows. And once\u00a0your\u00a0thinking changes, the next issue you have to settle is ownership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Luke 16, Jesus told a parable about a rich man and his steward. The lesson is profound:\u00a0it\u2019s not your money<\/i><\/b>. God is the source of all you have. Your talents, your opportunities, your resources\u2014they\u2019re not for you alone. You are a steward. A steward is someone who manages something that belongs to someone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true\u00a0<\/i>riches?<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Money isn\u2019t the enemy\u2014it\u2019s just a tool. The problem comes when your heart is on money instead of on God. Covetousness and fear of running out\u2014those are signs you\u2019re not stewarding well. But when your heart recognizes God as the source and you faithfully manage what He\u2019s given, blessings follow\u2014often in ways you never imagined. If He can get it\u00a0through<\/i>\u00a0you, He will get it\u00a0to<\/i>\u00a0you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Practical Steps to Changing Your Money Mindset<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to help you live this out, so here are a few simple, biblical steps:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Shift your mindset:<\/b>\u00a0Recognize that\u00a0it is not your money<\/i>. God owns it, and He\u2019s entrusted you to steward it faithfully.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Start small:<\/b>\u00a0Faithfulness begins in the \u201cleast.\u201d Give generously from what you have, trusting God to multiply it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Obey, even when it seems impossible:<\/b>\u00a0Don\u2019t let what\u2019s in your wallet limit what God wants to do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Avoid comparing or blaming:<\/b>\u00a0Let go of societal prejudices and excuses. Focus on your stewardship, your heart, and your obedience to the Lord.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          If this feels hard, there\u2019s a reason for it\u2014and Jesus addressed it directly. Look what He said in Luke 16:13:\u00a0\u201cNo servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          There is a demonic spirit called mammon that uses fear and greed to make you depend on money. It tells you that you\u2019re going to run out, so when God asks you to give, you hold back and say, \u201cBut I need this.\u201d That spirit will keep you in bondage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          This is where a lot of believers get stuck. They love God. They want to obey Him. But this one issue keeps pulling them back. And until it\u2019s dealt with, nothing else really works the way it should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
